Who We Are

Filling a real gap in
Sri Lanka's marine science.

Based in the Department of Zoology at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, CMST was established to address a critical need. For too long, Sri Lanka lacked an independent body focused entirely on foundational, verifiable marine data.

We carry out extensive field research across Sri Lanka's coastal and marine environments, converting raw data into actionable insights for the future of our oceans.

Field Research

Our Core Programmes

The Centre carries out comprehensive field research across Sri Lanka's coastal environments, bridging the gap between raw data and coastal management.

Reef watch

Coral reef health monitoring, tracking the condition of some of the island's most sensitive ecosystems.

Seagrass & Mangroves

Surveys covering coastal habitats that are often overlooked despite their immense ecological importance.

Blue carbon budgeting

Measuring how much carbon these coastal ecosystems store, and what's lost when they're degraded.

Biofouling studies

Monitoring how non-native species establish themselves around major shipping routes in port environments.

Plastic Track

Following how plastic waste moves from the land into the sea, impacting marine life.

Ocean Watch

Monitoring signs of climate change and ocean acidification along the Sri Lankan coast.

Blue economy assessment

Exploring the sea's potential as a sustainable source of livelihood and growth for Sri Lanka.

Ocean Literacy

Bringing overlooked marine science concepts into Sri Lankan classrooms through Sayura Pasela.

Research to Regulation

CMST works alongside government agencies, ports authorities and regional partners on both the ocean issues Sri Lanka faces today, and the ones still emerging
